Q.In Step #1, why can't I just cut off the whole elbow and use the remaining pipe to continue?

A.The quick answer is that the illustration should include a solid surface (concrete, drywall, plywood, etc.) where the elbow connects to the short length of pipe. Unfortunately, adding another element to this particular illustration would only add to the confusion. Take a look at these "real world" example pictures, and imagine doing Step #1 to the highlighted pipe connections. You can also check out the OverFitting Media page for animated examples.
